Sami Zayn did not have an excellent start to the new year. Not only did he lose his beloved Intercontinental Championship on the last SmackDown of 2020, but also failed to become the top contender for the Universal Championship at the upcoming Royal Rumble this week.
While ‘the Great Liberator’ has argued how WWE is robbing him off of opportunities, his swift loss against Rey Mysterio in the Gauntlet match did not help his cause.
However, Zayn has come up with the ‘real reason’ why he lost. After the match, Zayn took to Twitter and explained how the referee started without his consent!
He felt thoroughly insulted as he said, “In 19 years, never had a ref ring the bell without consulting me first. Don’t worry, we got it all on film for our documentary. The conspiracy against Sami Zayn is real.”
Last night, Zayn introduced his own group of the film crew due to his loss of faith in WWE. This film crew will focus on Zayn and his journey in a documentary.
Sami Zayn is proud of his Intercontinental Run and tried to play to his Canadian Roots
While 2021 is yet to be kind to him, Zayn had a pretty decent 2020. He was the Intercontinental Champion for most of the year. In a recent interview with Sportsnet Canada, Zayn explained how he wanted to corporate a certain patriotism angle.
Bret Hart in his prime as a heel used to insult America and Zayn tried to do a modern version of that ahead of Survivor Series 2020 against Bobby Lashley.
“When I got injured, and I came back, that’s sort of an idea I had–if you put me in a run for the United States Championship when I come back, and I could do this character similar to what Bret did, and modernized and updated.”
However, Zayn soon dropped the idea because “the reality was too depressing.” “It’s like, man, this isn’t fun. We’re getting hit over the head with it too much nowadays anyway … It just wasn’t fun the way I had dreamt of it for years and years,” Sami concluded.
Sami lost to Bobby Lashley at Survivor Series and some may not that began his downfall. Since then, Zayn has adopted the ‘conspiracy’ angle to his character.
