Dear Eonni: Indian ReVeluv thanks Red Velvet’s Wendy for bringing ‘comfort during his darkest months’
Over the past few weeks, we’ve received letters from different parts of the globe addressed to numerous K-pop girl groups and their members. If you have been following the series, you would have seen letters addressed to members of BLACKPINK, MAMAMOO and TWICE. Today, we feature a letter from a fan addressed to Red Velvet member Wendy. An Indian ReVeluv named Kamong Ben Longkumer described Wendy’s attitude as “cheerful despite all the hurdles she’s faced.” He also revealed how Wendy inspired him to be a better person.
Read her letter below:
Dear Wendy/Seungwan eonnie,
Have you been well?
Eonnie, do you know that I became a ReVeluv only in March after lockdown gave me time to go back and re-discover Red Velvet’s amazing discography? I’ve been a fan since Peek-a-boo’s era, but months of staying home made me watch all the seasons of the Level Up Project, re-watched all of Red Velvet’s Music Videos, VLives, Variety Shows, Music and Award Shows performances and whatever content I could find on the internet, and unknowingly I had become a super-fan.
Dear Wendy eonnie, how do you continue to stay so positive and cheerful despite of all the hurdles you’ve faced and mountains you had to overcome since your debut until now? You amaze me! Do you know that it was your voice and your outlook towards life that gave me comfort during my darkest months, when I was so lost and conflicted about my future, especially as a graduating student? I was depressed beyond measure, whenever I thought about a future I could not predict and a career-path I could not risk to undertake. Eonnie, do you know that just by being you and for existing as Wendy of Red Velvet, you give hope not only to me, but to a lot of fans and ReVeluvs around the world? Remember when you said in Red Velvet’s 5th anniversary’s Vlive, “Wendy’s got your back?” I coincidentally happened to watch that episode on a day when I felt like the earth could swallow me up whole. I cried as I replayed that message- there was someone out there in South Korea who was able to comfort and relate to all the bad times we go through as human beings. People might laugh it off, saying things like “they don’t even know you exist, what’s the point of fangirling so hard?” But fans across all fandoms know better: the way that their idols can resonate with and are able to understand the multitude of emotions their fans go through is something that cannot be explained and put into words- Red Velvet makes me feel alive.
Dear eonnie, I cannot wait for the day I travel to South Korea for attending a Red Velvet’s concert and hopefully a fanmeet too! You promised ReVeluvs that Red Velvet will be around for a long time right? I’m going to hang on to your word. You are not just my idol- you are my role model, my inspiration, someone that makes me try my best before I call it quits, the reason I get goosebumps when I hear those flawless high notes and the reason why I laugh with tears in my eyes, under the sheets at 3:00 in the morning.
In typical ‘cheesy-Wendy’ style, you have been and will continue to be the “Son”shine in my life, and I will continue looking forward to a “future” that is full of hope. I’ll always be cheering you and Red Velvet on!
