The launch of CD Projekt RED’s long-awaited game, Cyberpunk 2077, has divided the gaming community into two groups. One is the elite club that can afford a setup to run the game without bugs and glitches. This faction doesn’t have to compromise graphics or performance and hence can enjoy the next-gen game at its best, where it delivers an experience never seen before.
The second club is more unfortunate. This group got the short end of the stick and are stuck with a miserable experience. Therefore, they have resorted to finding humor in the situation by making memes. This not only works as a coping mechanism but also as a way to express their dissatisfaction as well.
The most surprising member of the latter club, however, is CDPR itself. A 2018 tweet posted from the official Cyberpunk 2077 account has now resurfaced to haunt CDPR.
Throwback to when Cyberpunk 2077 predicted the game is going to be a meme
During the days building up to E3 2018, Cyberpunk 2077 had prepared a trailer for the event. They posted the trailer on the official Twitter account on June 11, which was widely appreciated. Fans all around the world expressed their hype for the game. One of these fans asked the publisher whether the game will have memes since “memes are the future”.
Back then, the publishers couldn’t have possibly predicted how the game would end up over two years later. However, at the moment, enjoying all the fun and the hype, CP 2077 posted a reply that is worse than the one they tweeted right before delaying the game for the third time.
At that moment, this might have seemed like a funny reply. However, over two years later, intentionally or unintentionally, this is indeed the reality. For a majority of players, especially on the PS4 and the Xbox One X, Cyberpunk 2077 is a meme.
The delay might have cost them the Game of the Year 2020 award, the launch would definitely have earned them the ‘Meme of the Year 2020’ award if there was one.
