Controversial Ending to Championship Match! Big E Defeats Apollo Crews in the Rematch on WWE SmackDown
Big E fought Apollo Crews on the latest episode of WWE SmackDown ( January 8, 2021) putting his Intercontinental Championship title on the line.
The irony is hilarious considering Crews teamed up with Big E to help the latter defeat Zayn for the championship. Soon after that, when Big E said he was ready to take on challengers, Crews jumped at the opportunity.
Both Superstars put up an impressive performance. In fact, they exceeded expectations. However, the match ended before the first commercial break, which confused Big E.
It so happened that a suplex ended up being a double pinfall. Even though the referee counted to three and the bell rang, the ending looked botched. Crews was already celebrating when E confronted the referee.
The referee seemed slightly puzzled too. Hence, he deemed that nobody had won the first match and started a second match.
While Big E was all for a rematch, Crews was not on board. He slapped E and demanded that the belt be handed over to him. Obviously, that did not happen.
Crews and Big E showed aggression from the beginning during the second match. Even though Crews tried to win the second match too, the Intercontinental Champion would not let it happen.
At the end, Big E hit a Big Ending to secure the win via pinfall.
Is WWE trying to replace Big E as the IC Champion?
WWE has become adventurous with the Intercontinental title.
The company made Big E the champion after putting him in a feud with Sami Zayn. However, he’s been the champion for a couple of weeks and is already taking on challengers.
Being too adventurous with Big E as the IC Champion can be the wrong path for the company. After a long time, WWE has an intercontinental Champion who has the sufficient credibility and an almost definite chance of being a future WWE Champion. For that to happen, they need to put all their weight behind the former New Day member.
